Kriegstagebuch der Seekriegsleitung 1939-1945. You may find some hints on this issue in: This problem could be connected to the preparation of “Tanne”, also discussed in the Kriegstagebuch der Seekriegsleitung. Unfortunately I forgot the source where I found Hitler discussing this problem a long time ago. If my memory serves me well there were neither enough trained Fallschirmjäger able to jump nore were they able to be dropped at night even over own territory. There was the idea to drop Fallschirmjäger near Cherbourg to reinforce the German troops in this area (circa June 22nd/23rd 1944). However, I suspect that the FJ replacements were less and less trained and equipped for jumps, is that correct? The FJs fought a lot on ground and I suspect that the original cadre received the formal jump training, and the rest was less and less trained. Later formed regiments were probably even more diffuse in training and experience.

were drawn from convalescents from other units and it is impossible to tell how many were jump trained. FJD was cadred from II./Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 5., but the cadre for Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 17. After that the jump capability became more diluted. Similarly, the jump-trained personnel of the Fallschirm-Jäger-Lehr-Bataillon, III./Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 3., and III./Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 4. FJD along with some Italian personnel from Nembo and Folgore, received jump training before they were transferred to the division. I./Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 2., II./Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6., and I./Luftlande-Sturm-Regiment, which provided the cadre for 4.

FJD received full jump training, which basically meant FJR 1.-9. However, I doubt more than one of the two was ever available for airborne operations at any one time. So I guess only the first two divisions may ever have received full drop training. I have a suspicion that 3rd Division was formed too late to receive full drop training as well. The 4th included some Italian paratroops. Just having the aircraft isn't necessarily enough.Īccording to Wikipedia, 5th Parachute Division was the the last formed that received "near full" Fallschirmjaeger training, but another source says this did not included drop training.

If I remember correctly, the Allied drop on Sicily was shambolic (and for those dropped in the sea, fatal) because transport pilots with little specialist training in airborne operations and underqualified glider pilots had to be used. You have a good point about the suitability of pilots.
